Excellent piece! I hope the world (and I) get a chance to read your story about those difficult feelings of complicity. It will be an important one for our present days.

Funny thing is, all the stories that I've mentioned in this series just happen to be the ones which went completely off the rails! I am planning to fix this one up though - it was a lot of fun to write.

Which is another thing about going down the fantasy route, it can be a lot of fun. You get to go crazy with it. The hard thing is then making that craziness readable :-)

Understandable. I can only imagine how hard it is to write fantasy. I've been considering it for a project I can't find tractable through realism, especially due to the timelines involved. It's also a climate-related project.

I do hope you're able to find your way through it and thread that needle to finish the projects. I'm quite serious when I say that the story you mentioned in this article would be an important one. I've seen nothing, anywhere, that deals with this difficult and complex theme. It's so deep in our experience—every one of us who cares about what's happening—and yet we have no stories to help us struggle with it. Stories are so important. Trying to write one about this possibly-even-fairly-novel human experience of feeling complicit in the demise of everything we love, well... you have my respect for even trying—and my sympathy ;)

May much strength and luck find you in your work....
